Sydney Fringe 2016
Meet Stephen Dedalus. You might recognise him as the protagonist from Ulysses or Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man.
I am Stephen Dedalus. I’m a writer. I write plays about other people. I write plays about myself. Good plays. I’m not sure if I wrote this one. I may have made some of it up. Why tell realism when it’s so mundane and fiction lies close around the corner? //As I rewrite myself over and over again I’ve lost track of my roots//.
I’m going to tell you the story of how I met Leopold Bloom, my dear friend //lover, father-figure, muse//, and the rest of my perfect life //until my eventual death, would it ever be as perfect as this//.
EDIT is an informal study in the relationship between author and character. Joyce’s autobiographic representation, Dedalus, is combined with Grehan’s aestheticised identity in a structurally episodic adaptation of Ulysses.
Role: Production Designer
History, Stephen said, is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.
